At 3 PM today, I observed another training session of the women's soccer team. This time they had a male trainer, Matt, he was new to the NSU staff and decided to see what it was like to train a girl's team. His warm up exercises were the same but his names for them were different then the female they had had before. He was able to incorporate numerous stretches into one exercises, when they would have done 5 exercises to stretch all of the muscles. It seemed that there was less laughing and talking with a male trainer, perhaps they felt intimidated by him. Before heading into the weight room, he had all of the athletes get in a huddle and say, "Hard work." This seemed to motivate the girls as they jogged to the weights.
Matt did not have to explain the exercises to the girls because they have been doing them for so long they remember. But for one new player, Matt was helpful in teaching her the proper way to do a hang clean. Cam had been working with her for the past 4 weeks on the proper technique but she could not figure it out. Matt helped her today and she has now mastered the skill, she was very thankful. Maybe the different coaching styles or point of view was all this player needed. Matt walked around the room as the girls finished up their workouts. He would occasionally give encouraging words and would critique an error. The girls seemed to enjoy his presence and did not mind the gender difference.
I was surprised to see the different level of intensity withing the players. It seemed as if a male trainer made the girls work harder. I noticed the names of the drills were different but the players were able to pick up and carry on with their usual task.
